Study From Life is a phrase i’ve borrowed from the director Elia Kazan. Kazan said “ The director must study from life — He must know the mountains and the plains, the deserts of our great Southwest, the heavy, clay-bottom-soil of the Delta, the hills of New England, Orchard Beach, too cold for bathing, and the warm water of the Florida Keys, which invites dawdling. Again, these are means of expression that he has, and among them he must make his choices. — Boredom, cruelty, banality are the only sins. (Kazan on Directing p240-243)
